Uptown, downtown? What’s the difference? When you begin to plan your New Orleans travel, think about where you want to go, what you want to see, and what you want to do. Uptown is a great place to visit within the city of New Orleans.
In New Orleans, downtown is generally the commercial district right by the French Quarter – often called the CDB (Central Business District).
Any New Orleans travel is not complete without at least some consideration of the fantastic locations uptown: St. Charles Avenue and Magazine Street.
Uptown is a whole different area, characterized by mansions along St. Charles Avenue, and shops, restaurants, and bars along Magazine Street. Both St. Charles Avenue and Magazine Street roughly parallel the Mississippi River, in a northern direction.
The streetcar line runs along the center of St. Charles Avenue, whereas Magazine Street has a bus line. The distance between St. Charles Avenue and Magazine Street can be walked, but in some areas it is quite a distance.
See our sections on St. Charles Avenue and Magazine Street, and decide which, if not both are for you!
